Le diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC) en techniques d’éducation spécialisée est demandé. Des connaissances liées aux méthodes d’intervention auprès de la clientèle, aux techniques d’apprentissage et à la santé mentale sont requises. Des habiletés en communication et en animation, l’autonomie, la capacité de travailler en équipe, le sens de l’observation, du discernement, l’empathie et la stabilité émotionnelle sont des qualités recherchées. Le bilinguisme peut être demandé.

La croissance des activités dans les secteurs de la santé, des services sociaux et de l’enseignement stimule la demande de main-d’œuvre dans cette profession. Les principaux employeurs sont les centres jeunesse, les centres de réadaptation, les centres hospitaliers et les commissions scolaires. Certains organismes communautaires embauchent également des éducatrices et des éducateurs spécialisés. Ces personnes peuvent intervenir auprès de différents groupes : jeunes, personnes âgées, personnes ayant une déficience intellectuelle ou souffrant de problèmes de santé mentale, etc. Le roulement de la main-d’œuvre s’explique par les fonctions de travail auprès de clientèles souvent lourdement atteintes ainsi que par les conditions de travail parfois difficiles (travail le soir et les fins de semaine) dans certains milieux.

Nature of work

Instructors and teachers of persons with disabilities teach children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities communication techniques, such as Braille or sign language, and rehabilitation skills to increase independence and mobility. They are employed in rehabilitation centres, specialized educational institutes and throughout the elementary and secondary school system.

Main duties

  • Instructors and teachers of persons with disabilities perform some or all of the following duties:
  • - Instruct students who are blind or visually impaired in reading and writing Braille and in the use of special equipment
  • - Instruct students who are deaf or hearing impaired in lip-reading, finger spelling and sign language, according to individual communication needs
  • - Instruct students who are hearing impaired in formation and development of sounds for speech using hearing aids and other devices
  • - Instruct individuals with physical disabilities and their families in the use of rehabilitative techniques, prosthetic devices, wheelchairs and other equipment designed to minimize the effects of a disability
  • - Assist individuals with intellectual impairments and physical disabilities to develop life skills, and provide job training and support.

Employment requirements
