Qualification and skills most often required

Aucune scolarité ou formation particulière n’est exigée. Le diplôme d’études secondaires (DES) ou un diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) portant sur les activités de l’entreprise, comme les grandes cultures, la production acéricole, la production de bovins de boucherie, la production horticole, la production laitière ou la production porcine, peuvent être demandés. Le Programme d’apprentissage en milieu de travail (PAMT) d’Emploi-Québec, pour le métier d’ouvrier ou ouvrière agricole en production laitière, constitue aussi un moyen de se qualifier et d’accéder à un emploi dans cette profession. Une bonne condition physique est nécessaire pour exercer ce métier. Des connaissances de base concernant l’entretien de la machinerie agricole ainsi qu’un permis de conduire de la classe appropriée sont souvent recherchés. La connaissance des animaux et de leur alimentation est parfois un atout.

Reason for labor demand

La demande d’ouvriers ou d’ouvrières agricoles est particulièrement élevée durant la période estivale et parfois concentrée sur de courtes périodes. Les conditions de travail souvent difficiles (horaires irréguliers, longues journées de travail, travail de fin de semaine, efforts physiques, faible rémunération, etc.) et le caractère saisonnier de certaines entreprises de ce secteur engendrent un roulement de la main-d’œuvre. Les employeurs éprouvent aussi de la difficulté à pourvoir les postes disponibles en raison d’une insuffisance de travailleuses et de travailleurs intéressés par ce secteur d’activité.

Nature of work

General farm workers plant, cultivate and harvest crops, raise livestock and poultry and maintain and repair farm equipment and buildings. This group includes operators of farm machinery. General farm workers are employed on crop, livestock, fruit, vegetable and specialty farms.

Main duties

  • General farm workers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • - Plant, fertilize, cultivate, spray, irrigate and harvest crops
  • - Feed and tend livestock and poultry
  • - Milk cows
  • - Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment
  • - Detect disease and health problems in crops, livestock and poultry
  • - Examine produce for quality and prepare for market
  • - Set and monitor water lines, air flow and temperature in barns, pens and chicken coops
  • - Clean stables, barns, barnyards and pens.
  • * General farm workers can become specialized in a particular type of crop or livestock production through experience.
